I really didn't know what I was in for, and to be honest, I was a little surprised with the direction of the novel. However, I immediately fell in love with it!
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is an extraordinary and captivating novel that took me on an unforgettable journey through Hollywood and the iconic character Evelyn Hugo -- this book is a true gem that leaves a lasting impression.
The story unfolds as an aging Evelyn Hugo, a renowned actress of the Golden Age of Hollywood, decides to reveal the untold stories of her seven marriages to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant. The layers of Evelyn's life are peeled away, revealing her triumphs, sacrifices, and the heart-wrenching secrets she has long kept hidden to Ms. Grant -- a character who doesn't truly understand why she was chosen for this opportunity.
But the heart of the novel is Evelyn Hugo. She is both a complex and compelling protagonist and through outstanding writing, Jenkins Reid delves into the depths of her character, portraying her vulnerabilities, ambitions, and the sacrifices she had to make for success. Evelyn is completely flawed, yet utterly captivating. You can not NOT love her at every turn, even when you know you shouldn't.
Monique Grant, the aforementioned journalist interviewing Evelyn, and the seven husbands we learn about in the novel, are equally well-developed. Each character brings a unique perspective and contributes to the overall characterization of Evelyn Hugo.
The novel's strength is its exploration of love in all its forms. Whether it's romantic love, friendship, or family, Jenkins Reid presents a touching and realistic portrayal of what exists in these connections. The relationships are beautifully crafted, tense, tender, and lovely all the same.
The novel also tackles important themes such as feminism, sexuality, and the challenges faced by women in the entertainment industry WIHTOUT being "preachy" (see other reviews of other books...I hate "preachy"). Through Evelyn's experiences, Jenkins Reid sheds light on the struggles and compromises women often endured to succeed in the former male-dominated world.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a novel that captivated me and will stay with me for a long time to come.
I highly recommend this book!

I feel like a lot of Taylor's books have the same story line. Although they are always well written.
Yowza! Did NOT see that coming (still shaking my head as if to wrap it around the cleverness that just took me for a ride). Unsure why, I kept picking up other books from my TBR list and somewhat avoiding this. Dummy. Ms. Taylor Jenkins Reid has quite a way of (again) leaving me feel as though I really know each of the characters - have a strong like and/or dislike of each - and as though I'm a fly on the wall in each of the scenes playing out. Down side: the love/hate relationship with the hangovers created from reading her books.
I just couldn't get behind Evelyn's life choices
I love the different verisons of love that this book discusses. Not everything is black and white in the real life and in this book.
